Order: Passeriformes
Family: Thraupidae
The Patagonian Yellow-Finch is a small, vibrant songbird native to the open grasslands and shrublands of southern Argentina and Chile. Males display a striking yellow plumage with grayish tones on the back and head, while females are more subdued in color. These finches are often seen in small flocks, especially outside the breeding season, and are known for their cheerful, twittering songs. Their adaptability allows them to thrive in harsh, windy environments where few other songbirds are found. During the breeding season, they build cup-shaped nests close to the ground, often hidden among grasses or low shrubs. Their presence adds a splash of color and sound to the Patagonian landscape.
Habitat
Open grasslands, shrublands, and steppe regions of southern Patagonia, often near water or rocky outcrops.
Foraging
Feeds mainly on seeds and small insects, foraging on the ground or low vegetation, often in small flocks.
