About the species
The Green-backed Firecrown is a small, energetic hummingbird native to southern South America, including much of Patagonia. Males are distinguished by their dazzling, fiery crown, while females are more subdued in color. This species is highly adaptable, thriving in a range of habitats from temperate forests to gardens and urban parks. Its rapid wingbeats and hovering flight allow it to feed on nectar from a variety of flowering plants, making it an important pollinator in its ecosystem. Habitat
Found in temperate forests, shrublands, gardens, and urban parks throughout southern Chile and Argentina, including Tierra del Fuego.
Foraging
Feeds mainly on nectar from flowers, but also consumes insects and spiders for protein.
