About the species
The Chubut Steamer-duck is a large, flightless duck endemic to the coast of Chubut Province, Argentina. It uses its short wings and powerful feet to 'steam' across the water. Adult males are larger and often appear white-headed, with an orange bill; females are smaller and browner-headed, with a broad white postocular stripe and a darkish bill. The species is highly territorial and is often seen in pairs or family groups. It is globally classified as Vulnerable, reflecting its restricted coastal range.
Habitat
Rocky coastal shores and islets along the central Patagonian coast, especially in Chubut Province.
Foraging
Feeds mainly on marine invertebrates, diving and dabbling among rocks and kelp beds close to shore.
