About the species
The Cattle Egret is a small, stocky white heron with a yellow bill and legs. It is easily recognized by its habit of foraging near cattle and other large animals, often seen perched on their backs. During the breeding season, adults develop buff-colored plumes on their head, chest, and back. This adaptable species has colonized much of the world in recent decades, thriving in open grasslands, agricultural fields, and wetlands. In Patagonia, it is a relatively recent arrival but is now a familiar sight in rural landscapes. Its association with livestock and ability to exploit disturbed habitats have contributed to its success.
Habitat
Open grasslands, pastures, agricultural fields, wetlands, and areas near livestock throughout Patagonia.
Foraging
Feeds mainly on insects and small animals flushed by grazing livestock, often walking alongside or among them.
