Rosy-billed pochard (Netta peposaca)

Order: Anseriformes
Family: Anatidae

The Rosy-billed pochard is a medium-sized duck native to South America, especially abundant in the wetlands and lakes of Patagonia. Males are notable for their vivid red bills and glossy black heads, while females are more subdued in brownish-gray tones. These ducks are social, often forming large flocks outside the breeding season. They are strong fliers and can travel considerable distances in search of suitable habitats. During the breeding season, males perform elaborate displays to attract females. The species is adaptable, thriving in both natural and artificial wetlands, and is sometimes seen in urban parks. Their diet is varied, including seeds, aquatic plants, and small invertebrates. The Rosy-billed pochard is not currently considered threatened, but habitat loss and hunting can pose local risks.
