Yellow Cardinal (Gubernatrix cristata)

Order: Passeriformes
Family: Thraupidae

The Yellow Cardinal is a striking bird native to southern South America, including parts of Patagonia. Males are easily recognized by their bright yellow plumage, black face mask, and prominent crest, while females are more subdued in color. This species is known for its rich, whistling song, which has unfortunately made it a target for illegal trapping. The Yellow Cardinal is now considered endangered, with fragmented populations remaining in Argentina, Uruguay, and southern Brazil. Conservation efforts are underway to protect its remaining habitats and reduce poaching. Its rarity and beauty make it a symbol of the need for bird conservation in the region.
