White-crested Elaenia (Elaenia albiceps)

Order: Passeriformes
Family: Tyrannidae

The White-crested Elaenia is a small, active flycatcher recognized by its olive-green upperparts, pale underparts, and a subtle white crest that is often concealed. Commonly found in Patagonia, this species is notable for its energetic movements and persistent, melodious calls. During the austral summer, it breeds in southern Chile and Argentina, including the forests and shrublands of Patagonia. In winter, it migrates northward, sometimes reaching as far as the Amazon basin. The White-crested Elaenia plays an important ecological role as both an insect predator and a disperser of seeds, thanks to its varied diet. Its adaptability allows it to thrive in a range of wooded habitats, from native forests to gardens and parks. Despite its inconspicuous appearance, its vocalizations make it one of the most easily detected birds in its range.

Habitat

Inhabits temperate forests, woodlands, shrublands, and sometimes gardens and parks throughout Patagonia.

Foraging

Feeds mainly on insects and fruits, often sallying from perches to catch prey or gleaning among foliage.
