Tropical Kingbird (Tyrannus melancholicus)

Order: Passeriformes
Family: Tyrannidae

The Tropical Kingbird is a striking and adaptable flycatcher found across much of Central and South America, including parts of northern Patagonia. Recognizable by its bright yellow belly, gray head, and olive-green back, this bird is often seen perched conspicuously on wires or treetops, scanning for insects. Its loud, chattering calls are a familiar sound in open country, urban parks, and forest edges. The species is highly territorial, especially during the breeding season, and will fearlessly defend its nest from intruders, including much larger birds. Tropical Kingbirds are also notable for their migratory habits, with some populations traveling great distances between breeding and non-breeding areas. Their adaptability to human-altered landscapes has allowed them to expand their range in recent decades.
