Straneck’s Tyrannulet (Serpophaga griseicapilla)

Order: Passeriformes
Family: Tyrannidae

Straneck’s Tyrannulet is a small, inconspicuous flycatcher native to southern South America, including parts of Patagonia. It has a grayish head, pale underparts, and olive-gray upperparts, making it difficult to spot among shrubs and open woodlands. This species was long confused with the White-crested Tyrannulet until careful study of its calls and plumage led to its recognition as a distinct species. Its subtle appearance belies its importance for understanding avian diversity in the region. The bird is often detected by its distinctive, trilling song rather than by sight. Straneck’s Tyrannulet is a migrant, with populations moving northward during the austral winter. Its secretive habits and preference for dense vegetation make it a rewarding find for patient birdwatchers.

Habitat

Found in open woodlands, shrublands, and forest edges, especially in Patagonian steppe and riparian zones.

Foraging

Feeds mainly on small insects, gleaning them from foliage and occasionally making short sallies to catch prey.
