Spectacled Tyrant (Hymenops perspicillatus)

Order: Passeriformes
Family: Tyrannidae

The Spectacled Tyrant is a small, striking flycatcher found in southern South America, especially in the open wetlands and grasslands of Patagonia. Males are easily recognized by their glossy black plumage and bold white eye-rings, while females are more subdued with brown and streaked feathers. This species is often seen perched on reeds or low shrubs, scanning for insects. Its energetic flight and conspicuous appearance make it a favorite among birdwatchers. The Spectacled Tyrant is also known for its acrobatic foraging behavior and distinctive calls. It is a resident and partial migrant, with some populations moving northward during the austral winter.

Habitat

Prefers marshes, wet grasslands, reedbeds, and the edges of ponds and lakes across Patagonia.

Foraging

Feeds mainly on insects, which it catches by sallying from perches or gleaning from vegetation.
