Silvery Grebe (Podiceps occipitalis)

Order: Podicipediformes
Family: Podicipedidae

The Silvery Grebe is a small, elegant waterbird found across southern South America, including the lakes and wetlands of Patagonia. It is easily recognized by its silvery-gray body, black crown, and striking red eyes. During the breeding season, adults develop golden ear tufts, adding to their distinctive appearance. Silvery Grebes are highly aquatic, spending most of their lives on water, where they build floating nests anchored to vegetation. Their courtship rituals are elaborate, involving synchronized swimming and head-shaking displays. This species is also famous for its parental care, with chicks often seen riding on the backs of adults. While generally quiet, they may utter soft trills and whistles, especially during the breeding season. The Silvery Grebe is considered a species of Least Concern, but some populations are threatened by habitat loss and water pollution.
