Order: Passeriformes
Family: Icteridae
The Shiny Cowbird is a small, glossy black bird native to South America, easily recognized by the male’s iridescent plumage and the female’s duller brown coloration. Highly adaptable, it thrives in open habitats, agricultural fields, and urban areas across Patagonia. Its most distinctive trait is brood parasitism: females lay eggs in the nests of other birds, leaving the hosts to raise their chicks. This strategy has allowed the species to expand its range rapidly, sometimes impacting local bird populations. Shiny Cowbirds are social, often seen in flocks, and their varied diet and flexible breeding habits make them successful colonizers.
Habitat
Open grasslands, agricultural fields, pastures, and urban parks throughout Patagonia.
Foraging
Feeds mainly on seeds and insects, foraging on the ground in flocks or alone.
