Scale-throated Earthcreeper (Upucerthia dumetaria)

Order: Passeriformes
Family: Furnariidae

The Scale-throated Earthcreeper is a medium-sized, ground-dwelling bird native to the open landscapes of Patagonia and southern South America. Recognizable by its brownish plumage, pale underparts, and the unique scale-like markings on its throat, this earthcreeper is a member of the ovenbird family. It is a solitary and inconspicuous species, often seen walking or hopping along the ground as it searches for food. Its long, slightly curved bill is perfectly suited for probing into soil and crevices for insects and other invertebrates. The Scale-throated Earthcreeper is well-camouflaged against the arid, rocky terrain it inhabits, making it a challenge to spot despite its relatively large size. Its song is a series of sharp, whistled notes, often delivered from a prominent perch. This species is non-migratory and is adapted to the harsh, windy conditions of the Patagonian steppe.

Habitat

Open steppe, rocky slopes, and arid scrublands of Patagonia and southern Andes.
