Sandy Gallito (Teledromas fuscus)

Sandy Gallito

Order: Passeriformes
Family: Rhinocryptidae

The Sandy Gallito is a small, elusive bird found only in the dry, scrubby landscapes of Argentina’s Monte Desert, particularly in Patagonia’s arid zones. With its pale sandy-brown plumage, it blends seamlessly into its environment, making it difficult to spot. This bird is known for its upright tail and distinctive song, which is often heard before the bird is seen. The Sandy Gallito spends most of its time on the ground, running swiftly between bushes and rocks in search of food. Its secretive nature and preference for remote, sparsely vegetated habitats make it a prized sighting for birdwatchers. As the sole member of its genus, it represents a unique evolutionary lineage within the tapaculo family.
