Rock Pigeon (Columba livia)

Order: Columbiformes
Family: Columbidae

The Rock Pigeon is a familiar sight in urban and rural areas of Patagonia, recognized by its plump body, short legs, and iridescent neck feathers. While wild populations are typically blue-gray with two black wing bars, feral birds show a wide range of colors and patterns. These pigeons are highly adaptable, nesting on building ledges, cliffs, and other structures. Their strong homing ability has made them famous as messenger birds throughout history. In Patagonia, they are often seen in flocks, feeding on the ground and roosting in sheltered spots. Their cooing calls and fluttering flights are a common part of city soundscapes.
