Monk Parakeet (Myiopsitta monachus)

Order: Psittaciformes
Family: Psittacidae

The Monk Parakeet, also known as the Quaker Parrot, is a small, bright green parrot with a grayish face and breast. Native to the temperate and subtropical regions of South America, including Patagonia, it is highly social and vocal. Unlike most parrots, Monk Parakeets construct elaborate stick nests, often in colonies, which can be seen in trees or on man-made structures. These birds are adaptable and have successfully colonized urban and rural areas outside their native range. Their intelligence and ability to mimic sounds make them popular pets, but in the wild, they are known for their noisy flocks and communal lifestyle.

Habitat

Open woodlands, savannas, agricultural areas, and urban parks, often near human settlements.

Foraging

Feeds on seeds, fruits, berries, and cultivated crops, often foraging in flocks on the ground or in trees.
