Gray-hooded Sierra Finch (Phrygilus gayi)

The Gray-hooded Sierra Finch is a small, robust songbird native to the southern Andes, including Patagonia. Males are easily recognized by their slate-gray hoods and bright yellow bellies, while females are more subdued in color. These finches are often seen in pairs or small flocks, foraging on the ground or among low shrubs. Their melodious song is a common sound in open, windswept landscapes. Adapted to cold, arid regions, they are resilient birds that can be found from sea level up to high mountain slopes. Their presence is a familiar sight in the Patagonian steppe and Andean foothills.

Habitat

Open grasslands, shrublands, rocky slopes, and Andean foothills across Patagonia and the southern Andes.

Foraging

Feeds mainly on seeds and small insects, foraging on the ground or low vegetation, often in small groups.
