Order: Tinamiformes
Family: Tinamidae
The Elegant Crested-Tinamou is a medium-sized, ground-dwelling bird native to the open grasslands and shrublands of Patagonia. Recognizable by its slender body, long legs, and prominent head crest, this tinamou blends well with its surroundings thanks to its cryptic brown and gray plumage. It is a shy and elusive species, preferring to run rather than fly when disturbed. The species is mostly solitary or found in small groups, especially outside the breeding season. Its melodious, whistling calls carry over long distances, especially at dawn and dusk. The Elegant Crested-Tinamou feeds on a varied diet of seeds, fruits, leaves, and insects, foraging mainly on the ground. During the breeding season, males incubate the eggs and care for the chicks, a rare trait among birds. This species plays an important role in the Patagonian ecosystem, both as a seed disperser and as prey for native predators.
Habitat
Open grasslands, shrublands, and dry steppes of Patagonia, often in areas with scattered bushes or low vegetation.
Foraging
Forages on the ground for seeds, fruits, leaves, and insects, often walking slowly and picking food from the soil or low plants.
