Order: Columbiformes
Family: Columbidae
The Eared Dove is a medium-sized, slender dove recognized by its grayish-brown plumage and distinctive black markings resembling ‘ears’ on the sides of its head. Commonly seen in flocks, it is highly adaptable and thrives in a variety of environments, from open woodlands and savannas to farmlands and urban parks. Its rapid, direct flight and soft, cooing calls are characteristic. In Patagonia, the Eared Dove is a year-round resident, often forming large groups outside the breeding season. Its resilience and ability to exploit human-altered landscapes have contributed to its success across much of South America.
Habitat
Open woodlands, savannas, agricultural fields, urban parks, and gardens throughout Patagonia.
Foraging
Feeds mainly on seeds and grains, foraging on the ground in flocks, often in open fields and farmlands.
