Order: Tinamiformes
Family: Tinamidae
Darwin’s Nothura is a small, ground-dwelling bird native to the open grasslands and shrublands of Patagonia. It has mottled brown and buff plumage, providing excellent camouflage among dry grasses. Shy and elusive, it prefers to run rather than fly when threatened. This species is known for its distinctive, whistling calls, especially at dawn and dusk. The male incubates the eggs and cares for the chicks, a trait common among tinamous. Though not often seen, its presence is detected by its calls and footprints. Darwin’s Nothura plays an important role in the ecosystem by dispersing seeds and controlling insect populations.
Habitat
Open grasslands, shrublands, and arid steppes of Patagonia, often in areas with sparse vegetation.
Foraging
Feeds on seeds, insects, and small invertebrates, foraging quietly on the ground among grasses and shrubs.
