Cory’s Shearwater (Calonectris diomedea)

Order: Procellariiformes
Family: Procellariidae

Cory’s Shearwater is a large seabird with long, slender wings and a pale head, often seen gliding effortlessly over open ocean waters. It breeds mainly on islands in the Mediterranean but is a regular visitor to the South Atlantic, including the waters off Patagonia, during migration. Its distinctive, slow wingbeats and graceful flight make it easy to spot among other seabirds. Cory’s Shearwater spends most of its life at sea, only coming to land to breed in burrows or crevices. Its diet consists mainly of fish, squid, and other marine creatures, which it catches by surface seizing or shallow diving. The species is highly social at sea, often forming large flocks, especially during migration or when food is abundant.

Habitat

Open ocean, especially offshore waters; rarely seen near land except at breeding sites.

Foraging

Feeds by surface seizing and shallow plunging, mainly on fish and squid.
