Cocoi Heron (Ardea cocoi)

Order: Pelecaniformes
Family: Ardeidae

The Cocoi Heron is a tall, elegant wading bird with a distinctive black cap, white neck, and grayish body. Commonly seen along Patagonian rivers, lakes, and wetlands, it stands motionless as it hunts for fish and amphibians. Its slow, deliberate movements and impressive wingspan make it a striking sight in open landscapes. The Cocoi Heron is solitary or found in small groups, especially during the breeding season when it nests in colonies, often with other waterbirds. Its adaptability allows it to thrive in both freshwater and brackish environments, making it a familiar presence across much of southern South America.

Habitat

Found in lakes, rivers, marshes, estuaries, and coastal lagoons throughout Patagonia.

Foraging

Feeds mainly on fish, amphibians, and aquatic invertebrates, hunting by standing still or wading slowly in shallow water.
