Order: Anseriformes
Family: Anatidae
The Chiloe Wigeon is a medium-sized duck native to southern South America, especially Patagonia. Both males and females display a beautiful combination of iridescent green on the head, white cheeks, and a barred black-and-white flanks. This species is often seen in pairs or small groups on lakes, marshes, and slow-moving rivers. Unlike many ducks, the Chiloe Wigeon is not shy and can be observed grazing on land as well as dabbling in water. Its whistling call is distinctive and often heard before the bird is seen. The species is migratory in the southernmost parts of its range, moving northward during the austral winter. It is an important part of Patagonian wetland ecosystems and is sometimes kept in ornamental collections worldwide due to its attractive plumage and calm disposition.
Habitat
Prefers freshwater lakes, marshes, slow rivers, and flooded meadows throughout southern Chile, Argentina, and the Patagonian steppe.
Foraging
Feeds mainly on aquatic plants, grasses, and occasionally small invertebrates by dabbling and grazing.
