Chilean Swallow (Tachycineta leucopyga)

Order: Passeriformes
Family: Hirundinidae

The Chilean Swallow is a small, sleek bird native to southern South America, including Patagonia. Recognizable by its glossy blue-green back, white underparts, and distinctive white rump, it is often seen darting gracefully over open landscapes. This swallow is highly social, frequently forming flocks, especially outside the breeding season. It nests in cavities, often using holes in trees, cliffs, or even man-made structures. The Chilean Swallow is an important insectivore, helping control insect populations in its habitats. Its adaptability to various open environments and its migratory habits make it a familiar sight across a wide range of southern latitudes.
