Order: Passeriformes
Family: Hirundinidae
The Brown-chested martin is a medium-sized swallow with a brownish chest and upperparts, contrasting with its white underparts. Commonly seen across much of South America, including Patagonia, this species is highly adaptable and often found near water, open fields, and even urban areas. Its swift, agile flight and distinctive chattering calls make it easy to spot as it hunts insects on the wing. During the breeding season, Brown-chested martins nest in burrows, crevices, or even drainage pipes, showing remarkable flexibility in nesting sites. They are migratory, moving northward during the austral winter. Their presence is a familiar sign of spring and summer in southern South America.
Habitat
Open areas near water, grasslands, agricultural fields, and urban environments throughout Patagonia.
Foraging
Catches flying insects in midair, often foraging in flocks over open spaces and water.
