The Black-chested Buzzard-Eagle is a large and impressive raptor found throughout Patagonia and much of South America. Adults display a bold contrast between their dark gray upperparts and white underparts, with a characteristic black chest band. This eagle is often seen gliding effortlessly over open landscapes, using its keen eyesight to spot prey from great heights. It is a top predator in its ecosystem, feeding mainly on small mammals, birds, and reptiles. The species is also known for its adaptability, occupying a range of habitats from mountainous regions to open steppes. Its powerful talons and hooked beak make it an efficient hunter. The Black-chested Buzzard-Eagle is revered in local folklore and is sometimes called the ‘Aguila Mora’ in Spanish.

Habitat

Inhabits open country, rocky hills, cliffs, steppes, and mountainous regions across Patagonia and the Andes.

Foraging

Hunts mainly by soaring and scanning the ground for prey, capturing mammals, birds, and reptiles with swift dives.
