Quick brief

  • Who it’s for: families, nature lovers, photographers and cruise passengers.
  • Route & timing: ~2.5–3 h each way from Puerto Madryn. Short coffee/rest stops as needed.
  • On site: flat boardwalks and marked trails. Respect distances and stay on paths.
  • Best season: Sept–Apr (nesting in spring; chicks late spring–summer).

Getting there

Roads are paved most of the way, with sections of gravel (ripio) near the reserve. Self‑drive is possible, but a guided day helps you keep timing realistic and unhurried.

Tip: Patagonia wind can slow travel — don’t over‑schedule; choose one main goal for the day.

When to go — month by month

  • Sep–Oct: nesting; adults busy on paths — superb for behavior.
  • Nov–Jan: chicks hatch and grow — classic family scenes.
  • Feb–Apr: fledging and departures.

See the Wildlife Calendar for overlaps with whales and orcas.

For cruise visitors (6–7 h ashore)

  • Meeting: outside Muelle Luis Piedra Buena. We coordinate exact pier timing by WhatsApp.
  • Back‑to‑Ship: we plan buffers to return 60–90 min before all‑aboard (traffic/port permitting).
  • Plan B: if wind or port ops make Tombo too tight, see cruise‑friendly alternatives.

Photo tips (Photographer’s corner)

  • Respect trail limits. Long lenses help for behavior; mornings often give softer light.
  • Protect gear from dust and wind; a lightweight rain cover is handy.
