About the species

This small ground-dwelling bird rewards a close look. Bold streaks cover the breast and flanks, and two pale lines can stand out along the back. The slender bill is relatively long for a pipit; white along the sides of the tail becomes easier to see in flight.

Usually encountered on the ground, alone or in pairs, it moves through grassy places in search of food. A singing bird may rise high above the vegetation. Where more than one pipit species occurs, voice and the complete pattern of the back and flanks are more useful than a single marking.

In our region. Included in our Península Valdés bird guide as a characteristic pipit of the region’s grassy habitats. Suitable grassland and rural sites around the peninsula and valley are the places to consider; it should not be expected uniformly across bare ground or dense shrubland.

Habitat

Grassland and rural open country, including grassy steppe, agricultural fields and the margins of wetlands. The presence of grass is more relevant than trees or dense scrub.

Foraging

Searches on the ground among grasses for insects, spiders and seeds. Its cryptic colouring can make a stationary bird difficult to notice.
