Commerson’s Dolphin

Commerson’s dolphin is compact and strongly patterned, with a black head, fins and tail contrasting against white body areas. Its short face and rounded dorsal fin help separate it from other local dolphins. Young animals are greyer and acquire the sharp adult contrast as they grow.

It inhabits shallow coastal water, bays and river mouths, taking small fish and other marine prey. Small groups may move rapidly, change direction or ride waves. For visitors based in Puerto Madryn, the neighbouring Rawson coast provides a distinct observation setting from the dusky-dolphin outings in Golfo Nuevo.

In our region. Included as part of adjacent coastal Chubut, with Rawson a relevant departure area. It should not be presented as a routine sighting from every Madryn or Valdés route; confirm the outing and sea conditions.
