Southern Right Whale

A huge head, strongly arched mouth and broad, dark body give the southern right whale its unmistakable form. There is no dorsal fin. Pale-looking callosities on the head create an individual pattern, while the broad flippers and occasional white belly patches provide additional identification details.

Península Valdés is a breeding and nursery area where whales gather to mate, give birth and nurse their calves. They filter small crustaceans through baleen and move between breeding waters and feeding grounds. Seeing a mother and calf close to shore is part of this seasonal coastal life, rather than a year-round occurrence.

In our region. The broad Valdés season runs from June to December, with variation at its edges. Shore opportunities around El Doradillo are mainly June–October; boat operations and conditions must be checked for the travel dates.
