Southern Mountain Cavy

This small cavy has a rounded head, short ears, no visible tail and a clean pale ring around the eye. Its grey-brown coat blends into dry ground and vegetation. The compact body and short legs make it quite different from the long-legged mara, despite their relationship.

It feeds on leaves, shoots, flowers and other plant material, usually close to the shelter of shrubs or burrows. Groups can be active in daylight, with brief movements between cover revealing animals that were almost invisible while still. It can also climb into low vegetation to reach food.

In our region. Resident year-round in suitable regional habitat. Small size and a close association with cover make it easy to overlook even where it occurs.
