Patagonian Mara

Long ears and long legs give the mara a hare-like outline, but it is a large rodent related to cavies. Look for the grey-brown back, warmer flanks and bold white rump band beneath a dark patch. Its tiny tail is much less conspicuous than its alert ears.

Maras feed on vegetation in open, semi-arid country and are often seen as pairs. Young shelter in burrows, and several pairs may use a shared nursery area. Adults spend much of their time above ground, alternating feeding with watchful resting in places that give a clear view.

In our region. A year-round resident of Valdés and adjacent dry country. Suitable habitat and quiet observation improve the opportunity to find it, but groups are not evenly spread across the peninsula.
