Geoffroy’s Cat

Geoffroy’s cat resembles a strongly built domestic cat in size, but normally carries many small dark spots and a clearly ringed tail. The ears have dark backs with pale central patches. Coat colour varies, and very dark individuals occur, so the full combination of shape and markings matters.

It uses a broad range of habitats and hunts mainly small rodents and birds. Although capable of climbing, much of its activity takes place near the ground. This largely nocturnal cat is recorded in coastal Chubut, where scrub and broken ground provide shelter that can conceal it remarkably well.

In our region. Present in the regional fauna, but difficult to encounter and not a dependable daytime target. Regional occurrence must not be read as a promise of a sighting.
