A field guide by Birding Puerto Madryn
Birding in Península Valdés
Sea cliffs, open steppe and sheltered bays. Discover the birds, choose your season and plan where to go from Puerto Madryn.
From the steppe to the sea
Península Valdés is a UNESCO World Heritage Site with a remarkable meeting of marine, coastal and dry-country habitats. A birding day here connects very different places: an open stretch of steppe, a salt flat, a seabird colony and a quiet coastal viewpoint.
The variety comes from moving between habitats. Some birds are residents; others depend on the season, the tide or the particular stretch of coast you visit.
- Coast & sea cliffs
- Look for cormorants, gulls and terns, with skuas and petrels offshore. Magellanic Penguin colonies are a seasonal highlight.
- Steppe & scrub
- Lesser Rhea, Elegant Crested-Tinamou and Patagonian Canastero bring the open Patagonian landscape to life.
- Salt flats & tidal shores
- Scan for Two-banded Plovers and other shorebirds. Water levels, tides and weather help determine where to spend time.

When to visit
There is worthwhile birding throughout the year. Spring and summer bring breeding activity and seasonal visitors; outside those months, resident steppe birds and the coast still offer plenty to explore.
| Season | What to plan around |
|---|---|
| September–February | Spring and summer: breeding colonies, displays and migrants. Timing varies by species, so choose dates around the birds that matter most to you. |
| March–April | The transition into autumn. Coastal birding and resident species remain rewarding, while seasonal visitors and colony activity change. |
| May–August | A quieter season for colonies. Plan around resident birds, daylight and suitable weather windows rather than expecting the summer mix. |
Have a particular bird in mind? Let us know before choosing a route. A regional checklist is a starting point, not a promise that every species will be seen on one outing.
Where to spend your time
Puerto Madryn is a practical base for exploring the peninsula. Allow time for the drive and for unhurried stops between the better-known viewpoints.
- Steppe and salt flats. Watch the open country along the route for rheas, tinamous and other dry-country birds, then scan suitable flats for shorebirds.
- Puerto Pirámides and nearby viewpoints. Explore the bays and cliffs for seabirds and coastal wildlife.
- Punta Cantor and Caleta Valdés. Spend time with the coastal landscape and its seasonal colonies, following the marked paths and viewpoints.
The best combination depends on your targets, the season and the conditions that day. Our private Península Valdés birding tour explains how we put those habitats together in a full day.
A little preparation makes a better day
Bring binoculars, layers for changing weather and protection from sun and wind. Keep to marked trails, give nesting birds space and take care at exposed cliffs. Avoid playback around sensitive birds and follow the protected area’s guidance.
If you are arriving by cruise ship, start with your time in port: a birding shore excursion needs a route planned around your all-aboard time.
