Harris’s Hawk (Parabuteo unicinctus)

Order: Accipitriformes
Family: Accipitridae

The Harris’s Hawk is a striking raptor native to the Americas, including parts of northern Patagonia. Recognizable by its dark brown plumage, chestnut shoulders and thighs, and white-tipped tail, this medium-sized hawk is unique for its social behavior. Unlike most birds of prey, Harris’s Hawks hunt in family groups, using teamwork to flush out and capture prey. This cooperation allows them to tackle larger animals and thrive in challenging environments. Their adaptability and intelligence make them a favorite among falconers. In Patagonia, they are often seen perched on shrubs or soaring over open landscapes.

Habitat

Open woodlands, scrublands, savannas, and arid regions, often near grasslands and semi-desert areas.

Foraging

Hunts in groups, pursuing mammals, birds, and reptiles by flushing and ambushing prey on the ground.
