Order: Apodiformes
Family: Trochilidae
The Glittering-bellied Emerald is a small, dazzling hummingbird native to southern South America, including Patagonia. Males are especially striking, with bright emerald-green feathers and a glittering, metallic belly that gives the species its name. Females are less vibrant but still display green upperparts and a whitish underbelly. This species is highly active, often seen darting between flowers and shrubs in search of nectar. Its rapid wingbeats and hovering ability allow it to feed efficiently, while its slender, slightly curved bill is adapted for reaching deep into blossoms. The Glittering-bellied Emerald is territorial and will aggressively defend its feeding areas from other hummingbirds. Its presence is often announced by a soft, high-pitched call. Adaptable and resilient, this hummingbird thrives in a variety of habitats, from open woodlands and scrub to gardens and urban parks. Its adaptability and vivid coloration make it a favorite among birdwatchers in Patagonia.
