Order: Anseriformes
Family: Anatidae
The Speckled Teal is a small, attractive duck native to South America, including the wetlands and lakes of Patagonia. Its plumage is mostly brown with fine dark speckles, and it has a distinctive yellow bill. This species is highly adaptable, found from sea level up to high-altitude Andean lakes. It is often seen in pairs or small groups, dabbling for food in shallow water. The Speckled Teal is generally shy and quiet, making it less conspicuous than some other waterfowl. Its ability to inhabit a wide range of freshwater habitats, from marshes to mountain lakes, makes it one of the most widespread ducks in southern South America. The species plays an important role in wetland ecosystems by feeding on aquatic plants and invertebrates.
Habitat
Found in freshwater lakes, ponds, marshes, and slow-moving rivers from lowlands to high Andean regions.
Foraging
Feeds by dabbling and upending, eating seeds, aquatic plants, and small invertebrates.
