Ashy-headed Goose (Chloephaga poliocephala)

Order: Anseriformes
Family: Anatidae

The Ashy-headed Goose is a medium-sized, ground-dwelling goose native to southern South America, especially Patagonia. Easily recognized by its pale gray head contrasting with a rich brown body, this species is often seen in pairs or small family groups. Unlike many waterfowl, Ashy-headed Geese spend most of their time on land, grazing in open grasslands, meadows, and agricultural fields. They are generally shy and wary, quickly retreating from potential threats. During the breeding season, they nest near water in southern Chile and Argentina, but in winter, they migrate northward, sometimes forming large flocks. Their diet consists mainly of grasses and seeds, and they play an important role in shaping the grassland ecosystems they inhabit. The Ashy-headed Goose is admired for its elegant appearance and is a favorite among birdwatchers visiting Patagonia.
