Peregrine Falcon (Falco peregrinus)

Order: Falconiformes
Family: Falconidae

The Peregrine Falcon is a powerful and agile raptor, instantly recognizable by its blue-gray back, barred white underparts, and distinctive black facial markings. In Patagonia, it is admired for its breathtaking aerial displays and hunting prowess. This falcon preys primarily on medium-sized birds, which it captures in mid-air with astonishing speed and precision. Peregrine Falcons are highly adaptable, nesting on cliffs, rocky outcrops, and even tall buildings in urban areas. Their populations suffered dramatic declines in the mid-20th century due to pesticide use, but strong conservation efforts have helped them recover in many regions. In Patagonia, they are a symbol of wild, open spaces and are often seen soaring above steppe, forest, and coastal habitats.
