Aplomado Falcon (Falco femoralis)

The Aplomado Falcon is a slender, medium-sized raptor with long wings and a long tail, giving it an elegant silhouette in flight. Its plumage features a distinctive facial pattern with a bold black ‘moustache’ and contrasting pale and rufous tones on the chest and belly. Agile and fast, this falcon is an adept hunter, preying on small birds, insects, and occasionally small mammals. In Patagonia, it is often seen flying low over open grasslands or perched on fence posts, scanning for prey. The species is admired for its cooperative hunting behavior and adaptability to a range of open habitats.

Habitat

Open grasslands, savannas, shrublands, and lightly wooded areas across Patagonia and other regions.

Foraging

Hunts mainly by flying low over open areas or from perches, often in pairs, targeting birds and large insects.
