The Variable Hawk is a medium to large raptor found across much of South America, including the windswept steppes and mountains of Patagonia. Its appearance is highly variable, with individuals showing a wide range of colors and patterns, making identification challenging. This hawk is known for its broad wings and short tail, which help it soar effortlessly over open landscapes. It is a solitary hunter, often seen perched on fence posts or gliding over grasslands in search of prey. The Variable Hawk is well adapted to the harsh Patagonian climate and can be found from sea level up to high Andean slopes.
Habitat
Open grasslands, shrublands, steppes, and mountainous regions throughout Patagonia.
Foraging
Hunts mainly small mammals, birds, and insects by soaring and scanning the ground before swooping down.
